When a young person is alleged to have committed an offense, the Juvenile Office responds along a continuum designed to hold youth accountable while supporting positive change. Depending on the circumstances, a case may involve any of the following:
- Intake — screening and initial decisions about a referral.
- Diversion — resolving matters informally, outside of formal court.
- Probation — court-ordered supervision and support.
- Detention — secure care when it is necessary for safety.
The least-restrictive, most age-appropriate response is always preferred. Detention and formal court action are reserved for situations that require them.
